Construction Inspections - Update on Job Site Safety Requirements

 Santa Fe, April 1, 2020 -In light of the ongoing COVID-19 public health emergency, the City is following suit with the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing department and is increasing protections for the Public as well as the City of Santa Fe employees with regard to building inspections. Effective immediately the City is implementing the following mandatory social distancing requirements for all field inspections conducted by inspectors:

  1. Residential Inspections:   When conducting an inspection of an existing residence where the inspector is required to physically enter the residence, all individuals must vacate the area of the residence where the inspection shall occur before the inspection can begin. No individual will be permitted to enter or remain within the residence area being inspected while the inspector is physically within the residence. For purposes of this directive, a minimum distance of ten (10) feet of separation from the area where the inspection is taking place must be maintained by all persons. 
  2. Commercial/ Non-Residential Inspection: All individuals must vacate any room or construction area where an inspector is conducting an on-site inspection. For the purposes of this directive, a minimum distance of twenty (20) feet of separation from the area where the inspection is taking place must be maintained by any individuals at the construction area while the inspector is on-site and conducting an inspection.

 Non-Compliance: Inspections shall be immediately halted in the event individuals at the inspection site refuse to comply with the provisions of this directive. Inspections for sites where non-compliance with the provisions of this directive occur will be rescheduled at a time/date when the customer can guarantee compliance with the provisions of this directive.

Inspections will not be conducted if immediate construction area is occupied by more than 5 people or if any worker on site has known exposure to COVID-19 or is currently under self-isolation restrictions.

Additionally, Inspections Division asks that individuals refrain from requesting any avoidable inspections during this time. Business License inspections are exempt, and not included in this order.

To schedule a construction inspection for your project call the City of Santa Fe's automated Voice Inspection & Permit System (VIPS) at (505) 955-6110 and select Option 1 for scheduling.  You must have your permit number available.  This can be found on the upper right corner of your permit.  Inspection requests entered prior to 3:00 pm will be scheduled for the next business day in most cases.
