Wildland Fire Preparedness

The Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) program provides information, assistance and recommendations to homeowners and landowners with property in the areas where forest fires are a danger.

The Santa Fe Fire Department (SFFD) is proud to be one of the only fire departments in New Mexico to have two full-time positions dedicated to Wildland Urban Interface issues and Wildfire Prevention.

In addition, the department has had a seasonal wildland firefighting hand crew to assist with fuel management in the Wildland Urban Interface and to respond to wildland fires.

Our Wildland Urban Interface Specialist and Wildland Superintendent conduct individual home assessments to evaluate your wildland fire risk and hazard and to provide wildfire information for homeowner's associations and events.

Through grants awarded from the US Forest Service and NM State Forestry, the SFFD Wildland Division can conduct hazardous fuels reduction on projects prioritized in the Santa Fe Fireshed.  If you are interested in participating in our hazardous fuels reduction program complete the Landowner Request for Assistance Form and submit it to Wildland Superintendent, Nathan Miller at [bot protected email address] or call (505)955-3901.

To set up a home assessment, get a copy of your completed assessment, or schedule an informational presentation, email Wildland Urban Interface Specialist, Porfirio Chavarria at [bot protected email address] or call (505) 955-3119.
