City of Santa Fe Animal Ordinances
All dogs, cats, and ferrets over the age of three (3) months must be vaccinated against rabies.
All animals within the city limits must be physically restrained at all times. Voice command is not an acceptable form of restraint. The only exception to this is to utilize a designated dog park. All animals are prohibited in Cathedral Park, except service animals.
All dogs and cats over the age of three (3) months must be licensed through the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society.
All dogs and cats over the age of six (6) months must be spayed or neutered unless proper permits and licenses have been purchased from City Animal Services and the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society.
All animals must be provided with proper food, clean water, structurally sound shelter, shade, ventilation, necessary medical care, and basic grooming.
Confining Animals in or upon Motor Vehicles
Do not confine animals within a motor vehicle, especially in extreme weather conditions. If animals are in truck beds they must be tethered and have shade, shelter, and water, as well as relief from hot surfaces.
Special Events on the Plaza
All animals are banned from the Plaza during the Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast, Spanish Market, Girls Inc., Indian Market, Santa Fe Fiesta Labor Day Arts and Crafts Market, and Santa Fe Fiesta. Service animals are exempt.
Pet owners must clean up after their animals and dispose of their waste properly. Animals tearing trash or destroying others’ properties are also considered nuisances.
Animals are not to disturb the public peace unreasonably. Barking dog complaints are made through the RECC (Regional Emergency Communications Center) by calling 505-428-3710.
