Joe Salazar, 52, is charged with Aggravated DWI, Reckless Driving and having an Open Container inside the vehicle following a head on collision Wednesday, December 18, 2013 just after 8 p.m.
Salazar seriously injured three people who were traveling northbound in an 2011 black Ford pickup truck on I-25 near Saint Francis Drive.
Investigators think he was drunk when he caused the head-on crash. They also found an empty bottle of vodka in the vehicle, but have not confirmed if it was consumed the evening of the crash or on a prior date.
Salazar was extracted from the vehicle and is still in the hospital recovering from injuries. He will be booked on the above charges upon release. SFPD’s DWI Unit and Fatal Traffic Unit responded to the crash and will continue to investigate.
A tip was reported to the state’s Drunk Busters line (#DWI) just before the accident. A caller reported the suspect was driving erratically in the city. Multiple agencies were searching for the driver.
Passengers of the black Ford pickup truck are as follows and have all been released from the hospital:
43-year-old female from Pecos, N.M.
31-year-old male from Espanola, N.M.
39-year-old male from Rowe, N.M.
