During the 2020 Sister Cities Virtual Annual Conference, Santa Fe received an award for Innovation in Youth and Education (population category 25–100k). According to Sister Cities International, "[t]he Innovation Awards recognize the accomplishments of outstanding community and individual sister city programs that promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation...."
To achieve this award, Santa Fe sent a nine-member student group to Icheon, South Korea to participate in a Global Youth Music Concert, along with 10 of Icheon’s Sister Cities. The students, from all over the world, showcased musical scores from each of the Sister Cities during the final orchestral performance on August 2.
A group of music teachers, students, and families from three high schools worked together to represent Santa Fe and achieve this award – Mandella, Waldorf, and NMSA. They spent countless hours in preparation and raised travel expenses by busking on the Plaza, donations from Dollars For Schools, school dinners and concerts, and from a generous corporate donation from Meow Wolf.
This honor, not easily attained, is another example of what makes our Santa Fe community so outstanding. Congratulations to all who contributed to making this happen!
