Santa Fe Tops List Of ‘Most Vibrant Art Scene’ Regardless Of Community Size

Artists, Writers, Designers, Galleries, Museums And Thriving Markets Continue To Boost City’s Reputation And Appeal

Santa Fe’s arts scene is no secret, but now its unique appeal is backed by science. SMU DataArts, the National Center for Arts Research at Southern Methodist University in Dallas announced Santa Fe is at the top of their fifth annual Arts Vibrancy Index Report, which ranks more than 900 communities across the nation, examining the level of supply, demand, and government support for the arts.

“Santa Fe continues to solidify its reputation as a cultural and artistic center that has a unique energy of its own,” said Mayor Alan Webber. “Whether it’s music, dance, opera or art, museums and theaters and markets-- time and again our City comes in at the top of the rankings.”

Merriam-Webster defines “vibrancy” as “pulsating with life, vigor, or activity.” Based on SMU research, Santa Fe, NM is ranked the #1 most arts-vibrant medium-sized community in America. In the medium-sized community, Santa Fe beat out Pittsfield, Mass.; San Rafael, Calif.; Missoula, Mont.; Charlottesville, Va.; Ithaca, N.Y.; Burlington, Vt.; Boulder, Colo.; Ashville, N.C.; and Bremerton, Wash.. But even when compared to larger communities, Santa Fe still outscored them.

“We all know what a great arts city Santa Fe is and how important the arts are to both tourism and our resident life style, but having it recognized by a third party as the very best in the entire country is terrific,” said Tourism Director Randy Randall. “The cities following Santa Fe in this recognition were an entirely different list of communities from that in the best destination rankings by the readers of Travel and Leisure Magazine.  It is this sort of diversity that makes Santa Fe one of the most unique destinations in the world.”

Here's some of what the study had to say about Santa Fe: “Santa Fe, NM, is a cultural haven, with more artists, writers, and designers than just about any city in the country and home to one of the largest art markets in the country. Native arts are a cultural mainstay that predates Spanish and Anglo contact.”

The Arts Vibrancy Map includes data for every county in the nation, not just those listed in the index. Here’s a look at the full report
