News & Announcements
On July 18, 2020, the Santa Fe Police Department concluded the nearly month-long traffic safety and quality of life operation plan, “Slow & Quiet”. The Santa Fe Police Department’s focus was to deter drag racing and unsafe driving, as well as strict enforcement of loud mufflers.
The operation focused in the areas of the city with the largest volume of complaints, which was primarily within the Paseo de Peralta loop. Although muffler enforcement was largely on the north side of the city, officers city-wide made efforts to reduce speeders, enforce traffic violations and make the streets of Santa Fe safer for everyone.
During the 25 day operation, officers issued 113 traffic citations in the principal enforcement area and 477 traffic citations city-wide. A total of 13 citations were issued that were related to racing or reckless driving behavior; 6 citations were within the Paseo de Peralta loop, while 7 citations were in other areas of the city. Speeders in the primary focus area received 12 citations for speeding. In addition, officers issued 97 speeding citations city-wide. While enforcing the loud muffler ordinance, officers located several drivers with loud mufflers and issued out 18 citations for that violation. During the operation, the Santa Fe Police Department DWI Unit also located and arrested 5 drivers for driving under the influence.
Moving forward, the Santa Fe Police Department Bike Team will monitor the downtown area for unsafe driving and loud mufflers, while Patrol Officers keep a close eye on other areas of the city.
