Santa Fe MPO releases "Santa Fe Adventure"

Santa Fe Adventure: A kid’s companion to the 2020-2045 Santa Fe Metropolitan Transportation Plan

The Santa Fe Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is a federally mandated program that manages transportation planning for the Santa Fe metropolitan region. Every five years, the MPO updates the regional long-range Metropolitan Transportation Plan. The 2020-2045 plan was passed in May, 2020, and covers regional transportation services, needs, and priorities.

During the MTP development process, the MPO began a storytelling opportunity to demonstrate how transportation affects our everyday lives. This effort included a group activity guide for kids to tell their street stories (pre-COVID), and now, a kid’s story and activity book centered on transportation.

In the book titled My Name is Francis and This is My Santa Fe Street Story, readers follow the protagonist, Francis, on a day in Santa Fe with her parents. As they run errands to different parts of the city, Francis examines different parts of our transportation system through her eyes. Throughout the book kids can work on various activities such as word searches, a roundabout maze, and the opportunity to design their own road! The last page can be cut out to make a postcard where kids can share their own street stories and mail them to the MPO.

The books are available for free to kids and can be found at all three library branches (Downtown, La Farge, Southside), at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center, with the Rec on Wheels program, and through various elementary schools. Families can also find an interactive pdf version at https://santafempo.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Santa-Fe-Adventure.pdf. The book is geared towards grades 3-6.
