Santa Fe Mourns the Loss of Granite Mountain Hot Shots

The City of Santa Fe would like to issue deepest condolences to the friends, family and loved ones of the 19 firefighters killed Sunday fighting the Yarnell Hill fire in Arizona.

The Granite Mountain Hot Shots left a lasting impact in the city of Santa Fe and throughout the state.

The elite crew was assigned to the Thompson Ridge fire last month in Jemez. Leadership of the Granite Mountain Hotshots helped with incident command, and have also trained and mentored many members of the City of Santa Fe’s Fire Department.

“They’ve been a big support to us, and this hits very close to home,” said Santa Fe Fire Chief Erik Litzenberg. “A lot of what we do, locally, is thanks to what we’ve learned from these valiant individuals, and from what they have done with their program.”

Chief Litzenberg explained his department uses safety, program development, and even budgeting tactics cultivated by the Granite Mountain Hot Shots. He said they’ve experienced one-on-one what it is like to work with such a talented and dedicated group. Chief Litzenberg also said he spoke to the team’s commander last night offering any assistance the SFFD could provide.

These individuals are truly heroes and will be forever honored in Santa Fe.
