Recreation on Wheels: Coming to a Neighborhood Near You

Santa Fe, December 23, 2020 — In compliance with the Governor’s public safety orders, the Genoveva Chavez Community Center ice rink will remain closed until further notice.

To provide families with recreational opportunities while facilities and businesses are either closed or open on a very restricted basis during the pandemic, The Recreation Department has outfitted two Rec on Wheels vans with balls, books, arts & crafts materials, and science projects that will be shared by personnel who will conduct brief instructional lessons around town.

The sessions are by appointment only, for a maximum of 5 participants. Normal hours are from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. (or dusk) on weekdays. During school winter break, hours are extended from 10 a.m. to dusk. No services will be offered on scheduled holidays.

Currently these sessions are by reservation only to ensure proper spacing and headcounts. For more information please visit chavezcenter.com and the GCCC Facebook page (facebook.com/chavezcommunitycenter) or call (505) 955-4065 or (505) 405-4066.

The sessions will comply with the Governor’s Public Health Order. City of Santa Fe Youth Coordinators and Recreation Department fitness specialists teach the participants COVID-safe practices, like how to wear a mask. Then the coordinators will demonstrate safe movement techniques and skills, like how to handle a soccer ball or volleyball. Youth specialists also distribute books and demonstrate a fun science project. The specialists have been trained in safety protocols and most speak Spanish.

“If families can’t come to us, we will go to them,” said Recreation Director John Munoz. “I am very proud of the innovation and creativity Melissa Bustos, Daniel Garcia, Michael Olguin, and the rest of my team came up with to launch this initiative.”

As a reminder when you are outside having fun, keep the following in mind:

·     Avoid crowded parks.

·     Stay at least 6 feet away from people with whom you do not live.

·     Wear face coverings.

·     If you are sick or feel sick, stay home.

·     Treat one another with kindness.

·     Wash your hands often, use sanitizer, and do not share items with people with whom you don’t live.
