Officers Run Down Purse Snatcher
With the help of multiple civilians, Santa Fe Police Officers were able to run down a suspected purse snatcher and catch him rummaging through his loot.
The incident happened Thursday, July 4, 2013. The suspect Andres Nevares, 30, is accused of swiping a purse from the shoulder of 64-year-old woman while she was shopping at the Devargas Mall. The victim says Nevares came up behind her, tore the strap of her purse and ran into the parking lot.
At that time a man saw the suspect fleeing and gave chase on foot. Another witness also saw the commotion and was able to track the suspect in her car and follow him through the neighborhood. As officers arrived, the good Samaritans were able to point them in the suspect’s direction.
Officers then used foot prints and witness’s statements to corner Navarez on the 300 block of Fiesta Street, but Nevares refused to give up. He then ran from police, but was apprehended a short time later. Nevarez had the victim’s credit cards and money in his pockets.
He is charged with robbery, resisting or obstructing an officer and tampering with evidence.
Santa Fe Police would like to thank the civilians involved, but do not ever recommend chasing suspects. Instead try and get the best description possible and call 911 immediately.
