Officers Help Deserving Families

Seventy families who would have otherwise gone without will now have hefty Thanksgiving meals thanks to local business sponsors, Santa Fe County Housing and the dedicated men and women of the Santa Fe Police Department.

Tuesday, November 26, 2013 members of the department’s Public Community Relations division handed out complete Thanksgiving meals to preselected families. The meals included pre-cooked turkeys, hams, mashed potatoes, stuffing, pies, rolls and vegetables. The food was donated by Santa Fe’s Albertsons and Sam’s Club.

It is a five year tradition officers say they look forward to each holiday season.

Deserving recipients included disabled, elderly veterans, single parent families and needy residents who could not afford to put food on the table this year.

Many of the recipients told officers without their help, they would not be able to celebrate the upcoming holiday.

“I delivered a turkey to an elderly nurse who served during World War II,” said Community Relations Officer Nico Butler. “She almost cried when she saw what I had in the bag. It was an amazing feeling.”

“This is one of the things I really enjoy about my position,” said Community Relations Officer Louis Montoya. “It makes you appreciate what you have when you see just how thankful a family in need is upon receiving even the most humble donation.”

You can see video of Officer Montoya helping a family take their treasures to their car on the department’s FACEBOOK page.

SFPD is also looking for monetary donations to assist with their Shop with a Cop holiday program. Needy children are given money and escorted by an officer to buy a Christmas present. For many it’s the only one they’ll receive that year. Businesses/residents who donate will be publicized in a SFPD press release, on the department’s Facebook and Twitter pages and have their logos displayed on a banner during the event. The banner will be featured in the department’s lobby throughout the season.

Any interested parties can contact Officer Jessica Sanchez at 505-955-5007.
