New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence, City, Community to Commemorate Sandy Hook on 12/12

On December 2, 2015, 14 people were shot and killed and 14 injured in another mass shooting. It was the second mass shooting that week. On Friday, December 27 a man shot and killed several people at a Planned Parenthood in Colorado. Every day 92 people are shot and killed in the United States. 

New Mexico ranks the 9th highest for gun deaths. In 2013, the third leading cause of death for New Mexican children ages 1-18 was homicide, with 74% of those deaths occurring by firearm. In the same year, the second leading cause of death for New Mexican children ages 1-18 was suicide, with 34% of deaths occurring with a firearm. NM ranks third highest for women being killed by an intimate partner, the majority by firearm.

On December 12,,2015 at noon on the Santa Fe Plaza, Mayor Javier M. Gonzales, New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence and members of the First Presbyterian Choir will participate in one of the 200 events in 39 states commemorating the third anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, as well as the 90,000 American killed (and 210,000 injured) by firearms since December 2012.  The vigil will be a nationwide tribute in partnership with other national gun violence prevention groups.  Over fifty community members will hold life size cutouts in the shapes of human bodies with the names of people shot and killed in New Mexico in the last year. Students will read the names of the children shot and killed.

New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence will hand out free gunlocks provided by the Santa Fe Police Department, as well as educational material on gun safety.

Media and the public are encouraged to attend the event on the Santa Fe Plaza, December 12th at 12:00 p.m sharp.
