Friday, January 17, 2014 at 7 p.m., $5 donation
Mayor David Coss will participate in Desert Academy School’s Movie Night this Friday, January 17, 2014 at 7 p.m., $5 donation, at the Desert Academy campus located at 7300 Old Santa Fe Trail. The Mayor and students will watch the film, “Chasing Ice” and discuss potential local solutions about the issue on climate change. The event is sponsored by three student clubs: the Outdoors and Sustainability Club, the Loving the Lands Club, and the Hobbits Club.
“I’m delighted at the opportunity to discuss the issue of climate change with our future leaders,” said Mayor David Coss.
Cora Cliburn, a senior honor student at Desert Academy, was a recipient of the 2013 Mayor’s awards for Excellence in the Arts and awarded the 2013 Melissa Engestrom Youth Artist. She is dedicated to using the arts to promote community building and social and environmental change.
“I had heard Mayor Coss mention that, before he was Mayor, he worked in environmental science. We have also followed his work supporting local environmental policy,” said Cora Cliburn. “We wanted to hear his advice to youth, and felt that this would be a great way to bring the community together around climate issues.”
The film, “Chasing Ice” is the story of a National Geographic photographer whose dramatic footage of collapsing glaciers and changing landscapes constrict years to heartbeats, and of his struggle to get the story of the climate crisis out for everyone to see and understand.
The Outdoors Club of Desert Academy seeks to help our community connect with climate issues through artistic mediums. Last year the club sponsored the first student-driven, community-based climate awareness event “Climate Night: What’s Up with the Weather?” Funds raised at the movie night event will be put toward lowering Desert Academy’s carbon footprint and building a youth coalition on climate. A $5 donation is suggested.
