Mayor Names Carmen Gonzales as Education Advisor

Santa Fe, NM –
Mayor Alan Webber has named Dr. Carmen Gonzales as his volunteer advisor on education. The Mayor released the following statement announcing the choice:

“Carmen Gonzales is an experienced, knowledgeable, and pragmatic leader on educational policy and performance. The most frequent question I get as Mayor is, ‘what are you doing to improve our schools?’ The truth is, these are our kids, but it’s the Schools District’s schools. The obvious solution is to find creative ways to be a constructive partner with our schools.”

“We need a close and collaborative relationship. For that reason, I’ve asked Carmen Gonzales to serve as my Education Advisor. Her lifelong commitment to education makes her the perfect choice. She has been a leader at the community college and at New Mexico State University. She helped craft Santa Fe’s education agenda, working with a cross-section of our City’s education-focused non-profits.

“Her responsibilities will involve identifying opportunities where the School District and the City can work more closely and collaboratively, in everything from summer programs to computer literacy, from mentorship to sports and fitness, from housing and future school locations to social determinants of health.

“We need the City and the School District to work together on behalf of our kids and families. Having Carmen serve as the education advisor to the Mayor will improve that working relationship and deliver better results for Santa Fe.”

Dr. Gonzales said, “I’ve seen firsthand this administration’s commitment to education and understanding of the important role it plays in a community’s strength, resilience, and success. I’m excited to work with the Mayor, Council, and department leaders to have a direct, positive impact on the lives of young Santa Feans.”

Carmen is a native of Santa Fe She is also the President of the Santa Fe Community College’s Foundation Board of Directors.
