Mayor Coss Invited to Policymakers Forum

Santa Fe Mayor David Coss has been invited to join an esteemed US Travel panel at IMEX America, October 16th in Las Vegas Nevada. Prompted by the impact of the federal government’s shutdown and the negative impact of recently reduced federal travel per diems for the City of Santa Fe, outreach to US Travel and government meeting planners resulted in the Mayor being selected as a representative of a city greatly impacted economically. Also on the panel will be Washington, DC’s Mayor Vincent Gray, and former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman.

The Policymakers Forum will be hosted by Roger Dow, of US Travel and feature a presentation on the benefits of government meetings and conferences by Jon Gray of Rockport Analytics. The forum is being held in conjunction with IMEX America, the largest tradeshow in the US for the meetings and incentives industry.

In Santa Fe it is conservatively estimated that just over 1/3 of the hotel stays are government related. As the State Capitol and due to adjacency to Los Alamos National Laboratories and Sandia Labs, Santa Fe is host to government related meetings throughout the year, many of which use the Community Convention Center and/or hotel meeting space. The attendees contribute millions of dollars to the local economy in the form of lodger’s taxes, gross receipts taxes, transportation and retail spending. Over 9,000 jobs in the hospitality industry are dependent upon the continued placement of these meetings and hotel stays in Santa Fe.

The Mayors will make the case for continued government meetings and travel publically and with the media during this important exchange of ideas and tactics.

Wednesday, October 16 2013

Presented by the U.S. Travel Association, the IMEX Policymakers Forum on October 16 at IMEX America is an invitation only event that focuses on the need to keep the economic value of meetings on the radar of policymakers. Travel for business meetings and events is a force in the U.S. economy - key government policymakers from the U.S. have been invited to participate in this Forum and see this multi-billion-dollar industry at work, as well as the vast number of jobs it supports first hand.

The core objective of the IMEX Policymakers Forum is to have governments formally recognize the meetings and events industry as a major driver of economic growth and national urban/suburban development and to elevate it as a priority in the global political and economic policy agenda.
