A repeat drunk driver spent Christmas in jail after Santa Fe Police caught him driving drunk for the 11th time.
Robert Ortiz, 51, is charged with aggravated DWI, careless driving, failure to have proof of registration and failure to provide proof of insurance, this after he rolled his Chevrolet Blazer near the 1500 block of Pacheco Street just before midnight December, 24th. Ortiz claimed he was coming from work when he realized he was going the wrong direction, made a U-turn and rolled the vehicle.
When officers arrived Ortiz had already crawled out of his damaged SUV and was seen stumbling around at the scene. He was checked out by a SFPD tactical medic on the scene, refused medical assistance and smelled of alcohol. Ortiz failed a field sobriety test and later admitted to consuming Wild Turkey prior to driving.
At first Ortiz refused a Breathalyzer test, to help determine his level of intoxication, but he later agreed and blew a 0.19 and 0.20. A blood sample was also taken following the Breathalyzer test at the hospital. Those test results are pending.
A check of the national data base shows this is Ortiz’s 11th DWI charge.
He is currently being held in the Santa Fe County Jail on $15,000 cash only bond.
