There’s no place better to be during the winter holidays than Santa Fe, and that remains true this year, even under the extraordinary circumstances that prohibit us from gathering. The Plaza lights are glorious, so be sure to drive by and enjoy!

Canyon Rd. Farolito Going COVID-safe: Cruising, Not Strolling

The City will continue to the traditional Christmas Eve Farolito Walk this year in a more COVID-appropriate way that’s steeped in local flavor -- a cruise up Canyon Rd. in the family car. Residents will be able to enjoy the traditions of farolitos lining the lane and lighting the way. There will be no pedestrian traffic allowed.

Vehicles will enter Canyon Rd. from Paseo de Peralta, cruise up the historic lane, and exit onto Canyon Rd./Camino Cabra. Side streets intersecting Canyon Rd. will be blocked.

The Canyon Road Association has been supportive of continuing this tradition and we are grateful for their participation and enthusiasm to keep our traditions alive in a COVID-safe way.

Cruise traffic willl start at 5:15 p.m. and conclude at 8:30 p.m. Residents should expect delays.

Christmas Eve Luminarias

In the spirit of Christmas past, Fire Chief Paul Babcock and Fire Inspector Geronimo Griego are granting Burn Permit Amnesty for Luminarias in Santa Fe on Christmas Eve (but not on Canyon Rd.) Normally, all open burning without a permit issued by the Santa Fe Fire Department is prohibited under the City’s Fire Code.

Luminarias will be permitted throughout the City of Santa Fe on Thursday, December 24, 2020, from dusk until dawn as long as the following conditions are met:

1.     The area within 10 feet of the fire shall be clear of all combustible materials including grass, weeds, etc.

2.     Fires shall be attended and supervised at all times.

3.     Water or a fire extinguisher shall be readily available should the need for rapid extinguishment arise.

4.     Only wood shall be burned in the proposed fires.

5.     The fire area shall not exceed 3 feet wide by 3 feet long by 3 feet high.

6.     A means of rapid notification of the Fire Department shall be available.

7.     All fires shall be completely extinguished at the conclusion of the event.

Reminder: COVID-safe guidelines remain in effect -- no groups of more than five people should gather at a time, while maintaining distances of six feet between individuals.

Light Up Santa Fe - Explore the Best Holiday Decorations All Around Town!

The City of Santa Fe is inviting you to participate in the First Annual “Light Up Santa Fe” event! We all know the holidays will happen a little differently this year due to COVID-19, but we can still share warmth and good spirit with our Santa Fe community. Take part in this festive and safe activity by helping us map all the best holiday displays in town!

Then, use the map to plan some new holiday traditions – make a thermos of hot cocoa, hop in the car, and drive around Santa Fe to admire the holiday displays of your neighbors. You can also take a walk around a neighborhood to enjoy the lights (remember your mask!), or enjoy the displays by the fire, from the comfort of your home, by clicking through the images on the map.
