The City of Santa Fe Environmental Services and Division of Senior Services launched a composting pilot program at the Mary Esther Gonzales (M.E.G.) Senior Center on Alto Street beginning April 1. Volunteers and board members from non-profit Keep Santa Fe Beautiful will be onsite during lunch for the first week of the program to train, teach and assist residents with its implementation.
The composting program supports the strategies outlined in the Sustainable Santa Fe 25-year Plan, which provides a road map to carbon neutrality by 2040 and supports Mayor Allan Webber’s goal of making Santa Fe the most sustainable and eco-friendly city in the U.S. Carol Branch, Environmental Services Program Manager said, “the composting program also furthers the KSFB mission of leading the community to take greater responsibility for our environment.”
“I remember my grandmother emptying food waste items into an old coffee can and either throwing it to the chickens, or pigs, or even into an area for compost. I hope we are successful in encouraging folks to realize composting is a great idea and is something everyone can do to help the environment,” said Gino Rinaldi, Division of Senior Services Director. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, about twenty percent of the waste that enters our landfills is food. This program will help divert food waste away from the landfill and instead turn it into a nutrient-rich blend of decomposed organic materials that is extremely beneficial for plant health and growth.
Branch added, “Composting is a great way to demonstrate that small changes can have a big impact on the environment that we will leave for our children and grandchildren.”
The composting pilot program at the M.E.G. center will only accept food waste. However, garden clippings, dry leaves and other green waste have the potential to be composted as well!
