Governing Body Approves FY22 Budget

Last night the Governing Body approved the Fiscal Year 2022 Budget proposed by the Administration. City leadership had listened to and incorporated public comments about community priorities, and the City Council Finance Committee held two weeks of hearings that examined the spending plan in granular detail, department by department. The result was a unanimous vote in favor of adopting the budget.

Coming after a fiscal year of belt-tightening imposed by the uncertainty and lost tax revenues of the pandemic crisis (which is not yet behind us, despite New Mexico’s national leadership in vaccine distribution), the FY22 budget accomplishes three main objectives:

  • It restores and increases spending in areas that suffered cuts, notably in the workforce that responded heroically to the challenges of keeping the City running and delivering services during the pandemic.
  • It responds to pressing needs for immediate investment in social welfare, health and safety, facilities, and infrastructure that will enable Santa Fe to recover from the personal and economic crises of the pandemic year.
  • It lays a foundation for the strategic evolution of Santa Fe as a city that solves social problems, promotes equity and opportunity, and grows deeper into the 21stcentury while retaining its unique sense of place and character.

“The past year will go down in history as one of Santa Fe's most challenging," says Mayor Alan Webber. "The losses of life, quality of life, and livelihood that members of our community suffered can never be forgotten. It was a hard, hard year full of sacrifice. But we’ve gotten through it as a community. We stay together and stand together—like a family—and now the end of the pandemic is in sight. This budget plan tells the story of a City that now has the resources and the know-how to build back better. Its unanimous approval by the Governing Body means we now begin the exciting work of restoring and reopening our beloved city.”
