GCCC Ice Arena Prepared to Reopen Saturday, March 13

Dependent Upon Green Rating for

County Next Week

If Santa Fe County earns a Green risk level designation from the NM Department of Health on March 10, the date of the next bi-weekly update, the Recreation Department of the City of Santa Fe will welcome the public back to the Chavez Center Ice Arena. If Santa Fe is Green, which is a distinct possibility, the rink will open Saturday, March 13, under COVID-safe guidelines and U.S. Ice Rinks best practices. In the event that the county remains in the Yellow zone, the City will follow the state’s guidance.

"The GCCC staff is excited about the prospect of reopening the ice rink to serve that passionate community of athletes,” says Acting Recreation Department Director Gino Rinaldi.

Schedules and programming will reflect proper staff coverage for safety and public health.

Hours: The ice arena will operate from 2:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

Programming will emphasize training, fitness, and conditioning; all activities will be non-contact (no body checking in hockey). Masks must be properly worn at all times in the GCCC, even while skating.

Public Recreational Skating will not be offered at this time, but members of the general public can enjoy a one-hour freestyle skating session with a private coach by booking a reservation in advance. All coaches and skaters must purchase a punch pass. Coaching sessions will be booked in rotation to ensure equitable access to ice time throughout the week. Coaches/skaters must call to make reservations for each session: (505) 955-4065/4066. The GCCC figure skating harness will not be available, but use of coach’s harnesses will be allowed.

During Phase One Re-Opening the GCCC will not offer organized youth skating programs. However, private user groups can book ice time with a 24-skater limit. User groups must monitor locker room assignments for social distancing. Coaches are not included in head count. The skate shop will be open, the showers will not be in use.

Non-Organized All Levels Adult Hockey Drop In and Stick & Puck Sessions: There will be a 24 skater limit, goalies separate. Skaters must call to make reservations for each session. (505) 955-4065/4066. NOTE: No gathering; players are asked to arrive with most gear already on.

Ice Arena Access: Patrons will enter and exit the ice arena using the rear access doors. Staff will monitor, check in, and screen all users, following GCCC protocol. Patrons are asked to enter, participate in their activity, and depart promptly. Approximately 30 minutes will be designated between sessions for cleaning and disinfecting per State, City, and GCCC public health guidelines. Access will be blocked between the arena and the main part of the GCCC. Ice arena user groups will pay with permits and/or have GCCC Punch Passes. There will be no cash transactions.

Patron Information and Updates: The ice arena manager will update the web page and ice arena schedules.

Reservations: Starting at 9:00 a.m., please call (505) 955-4065/4066 no more than 24 hours in advance to reserve ice time on a first-come, first-served basis. Call the same phone numbers for information about access and payment. Upon making a reservation, patrons will be given a Covid-19 screening questionnaire, which should be completed before arrival, though hard copies will be available. Staff will take the user’s temperature; a reading of 100.4 degrees or higher, or a yes answer to any questions, will disqualify entrance to the ice arena.

Contact/Questions: Please email the ice arena manager [bot protected email address] or call (505) 955-4031 for specific questions. Check the website at for updated information.
