Drunk Driver Almost 3 Times Above Legal Limit

Blood test results returned from the state lab show Joe Salazar’s blood alcohol level was 0.21 when the 52-year-old caused a head on/wrong way collision Wednesday, December 18, 2013 on I-25 near Saint Francis Drive.

Joe Salazar, 52, is charged with three counts of aggravated DWI resulting in great bodily harm, reckless driving and having an open container.

The department and District Attorney’s Office was waiting on the BAC results to file official charges in the case.

Salazar was hospitalized for multiple weeks, but has since been released from the hospital.

The victims, three men ages 43, 31 and 39 were treated for injuries the night of the crash and released from the hospital shortly after.

An empty bottle of vodka was found inside Salazar’s vehicle. The legal level of presumed intoxication in New Mexico is 0.08.

Police dash camera video of the crash can be seen on the department’s YouTube page.
