Making Rail Runner Stations Safer

By Mayor Alan Webber

You're probably aware that in recent weeks there were violent crimes at two of our Rail Runner stations, one on a platform and one in a parking lot. To address everyone's concerns about security at the stations, last Friday I convened a meeting with the Community Health and Safety Department leadership and Rail Runner leadership, the managers of the stations.

The discussion was productive and constructive. We shared what we knew about the problem and they expressed their concern and eagerness to do their part, as operator of the train, to ensure public safety. They indicated they have funding to increase camera technology at City stations and, in addition, have public safety personnel who can increase their monitoring of the parking areas adjacent to the stations. I was assured that it's worked at other stations in other towns, and I'm confident it's going to work here, too, to make Santa Fe safer.
