As Summer Wanes, City Moves Proactively to Keep Bicentennial Pool Open for Families

SANTA FE –
it’s a classic conundrum in cities across the country: as summer comes to an end, seasonal lifeguard hires head back to college or high school, and leave their jobs early to enjoy the last few weeks of sun.

In the past that problem has led to the City’s only outdoor pool, Bicentennial Pool at Alto Park, curtailing hours or even closing before Labor Day to make sure lifeguard staff wasn’t spread too thin. This year the plan had been to cut back on the hours at the pool.

But no more. Mayor Javier M. Gonzales announced today that he and Mayor Pro Tem Signe Lindell, who represents the area in which Bicentennial is located, have worked with Parks and Recreation staff and City administrators to enact a plan that would shift resources from indoor pools at other Recreation Centers – primarily Ft. Marcy – to keep Bicentennial Pool open longer for families throughout the city to enjoy.

As a result, Bicentennial will remain open for its full operating hours for the next 5 days until school starts up again on August 15th, with one exception, the day of the Santa Fe Triathlon.

“Our families are almost ready to head back to school,” said the Mayor, “and as the summer comes to a close they deserve to spend more time in the sun with the kids, splashing and enjoying the last few days of freedom before we get back to the school year routine. We’re glad we could work together, be proactive, and come up with a solution to this problem we seem to face every year.”

Councilor Lindell said, “This is our only outdoor pool, so I think it’s really important that we work to keep that open for kids before they go back to school this fall. I’m proud of the way the city worked to get this done and I hope the kids get a lot of enjoyment out of it before class starts up again.”

Starting tomorrow, August 11th, staffing and open swim hours will shift according to the following plan to keep Bicentennial Open through the 15th:

  • Friday, 8/11: Bicentennial pool open until 5:00pm; Fort Marcy pool closed from 1:00-5:00 pm, re-open at 5:30pm.
  • Saturday, 8/12: Bicentennial and GCCC closed this day for previously scheduled city Triathlon.
  • Sunday, 8/13: Bicentennial pool open full hours from 10 am to 5 pm; Salvador Perez Community Center closed all day. Fort Marcy Complex is closed all day as normal, GCCC is open all day.
  • Monday and Tuesday (8/14 - 8/15): Bicentennial pool open until 5 pm, Fort Marcy Pool closed from 1:00-5:00 pm, re-open at 5:30pm

After the 15th, Bicentennial will remain open on a 6:30am-1:15pm M-F schedule through September 8th.
