Art is CORE: 3rd Annual ArtWorks WORKS!

An exhibit featuring the work of young local artists in the Santa Fe Public Schools

Opening Reception: Friday, March 7th, 5-7 p.m.

The City of Santa Fe Arts Commission Community Gallery announces “Art is CORE: 3rd Annual ArtWorks WORKS!,” an exhibit featuring a selection of children’s work produced by public elementary school students in Santa Fe. Art is CORE will feature student figure drawing and landscapes inspired by works by Francisco Goya and Georgia O’Keeffe. This exhibit was developed in partnership with the Partners in Education Foundation to promote the programming of ArtWorks in the Santa Fe Public Schools. The exhibit will open on Friday, March 7th and continue through Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014. There will be a family-friendly artists’ reception on Friday, March 7 from 5-7 p.m. in the Community Gallery.

Inspiration for the work in Art is CORE came from two exhibits: “Renaissance to Goya: prints and drawings from Spain” at the New Mexico Museum of Art and “Modern Nature: O'Keeffe and Lake Georg.” at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum.

“This exhibit is particularly important for the Community Gallery because it offers the Arts Commission an opportunity to feature the work of local public school children’s art and the dynamic programming ArtWorks provides to the community,” stated Community Gallery Manager Rod Lambert. “This is one of our favorite annual exhibits.”

ArtWorks’ mission is to make the arts personally meaningful to children and elementary school teachers through an integrated program of arts-making, viewing live performances and exhibitions, and achieving understanding through inquiryand reflection. The program stimulates collaborative learning between Santa Fe students, educators, artists and arts organizations.

Started by the City of Santa Fe Arts Commission in 2001, ArtWorks is now a program of the Partners in Education Foundation for the Santa Fe Public Schools. ArtWorks uses a teaching methodology adapted from Lincoln Center Institute in New York City which involves hiring and training teaching artists to present classroom workshops around ‘live’ experiences with works of art—a poetry reading, opera, concert, play, dance performance or tour of a museum exhibit.

The Community Gallery supports local artists, promotes artistic excellence, and strengthens the local arts economy through diverse exhibits, educational and professional development opportunities for local artists, and engaging activities for the public. Through thoughtful and creative programming, the Community Gallery is a hub for viewing quality New Mexico art and the presentation of dynamic educational opportunities, bringing art to the community as well as the community to art.

The Community Gallery, located inside the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, 201 West Marcy, is open Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 5 PM and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 pm. For more information call 505-955-6705. For more information, call 505-955-9705.
