Quick police response and vigilant business owners helped put two men behind bars after they were caught throwing rocks through windows of several downtown businesses.
Kenneth Brooks, 45, and Rustin Radcliffe, 34, face felony criminal damage charges after a business owner saw the men causing thousands of dollars in damage to nearby properties just before 3 a.m. Thursday.
Radcliffe was seen breaking windows of two lawyer’s offices on the 200 Block of De Vargas Street causing at least $1,500 in damage. He’s charged with two counts of criminal damage to property.
Brooks admitted to police he smashed out a window of a business on the 200 block of Galisteo and was caught with a rock in his back pocket. Damages there totaled at least $1,500. He faces one count of criminal damage to property.
Both men have lengthy criminal histories. Online records show Brooks has been arrested 48 times since 2001. Charges include assault on a peace officer, aggravated battery on a household member, possession of a controlled substance, shoplifting, criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct, public affray and having alcohol in public places.
Radcliffe according to records has been arrested 21 times since 2004 for charges of negligent use of a deadly weapon, resisting/obstructing an officer, assault, drinking in public, criminal damage, trespassing and panhandling.
It is unclear if the men were intoxicated during this event.
“As is evident by the suspect’s records, my officers’ rapid response and thorough investigations likely prevented these men from causing further damage or even burglarizing the targeted businesses,” Santa Fe Police Chief Raymond Rael said. “I commend them for their efforts and applaud the results.”
