Councilor Michael Harris was elected to the Governing Body in March 2016 and is serving his first term as City Councilor, representing District 4.

Councilor Harris serves on the following boards and committees:

  • Finance Committee - Member
  • Economic Development Advisory Committee –  Chair
  • Buckman Direct Division Board - Alternate
  • Solid Waste Management Joint Powers Board - Chair


He received a Bachelor’s degree from SMU in 1970 and holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan. He and his wife are the parents of three adult children.

Since 1976, Michael Harris had been President of three related companies providing general construction, development and construction management services to a range of clients, including public school districts, The Trust for Public Land, The Santa Fe Opera and more. He also has a long history as a public servant on the City of Santa Fe’s Planning Commission and as a past Board member and President of Partners in Education.

Given his background in business collaborating with multiple stakeholders to deliver large capital projects, Councilor Harris is now focused on greater fiscal discipline through strategic planning that will result in a priority-based budget and improved services for the citizens of Santa Fe. He is also dedicated to increased collaboration between the City and County, an undertaking that requires an ongoing effort in order to meet the challenges of today.
