The City of Santa Fe Arts Commission celebrates the Community Gallery’s 10th year Anniversary with “Exquisite Corpse: A Celebration of 10 Years” on display October 19, 2018 through January 17, 2019. The public is invited to attend an opening on Friday, October 19, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Community Gallery, 201 West Marcy Street.

Has it really been that long? The Community Gallery opened its doors in September of 2008 with the inaugural exhibit “ReNew,” featuring the work of 22 local artists. Since then, the Community Gallery has produced over 30 themed exhibits as varied as the artists of New Mexico. We have challenged artists and provided a window into our creative community for residents and visitors. For beginning artists, the Community Gallery has served as a place to exhibit their work publicly for the first time, while at the same time offering career artists the chance to explore new media, content or concepts. We have offered workshops, lectures, panel discussions and performances to enhance further exhibit themes.

With grant support from both the National Endowment for the Arts and New Mexico Arts, we have presented exhibits and programming that illuminate the culture of New Mexico. We have sold art and, through those sales, provided economic benefit to local artists and galleries. Most importantly, the Community Gallery has served as a place to display and view art while becoming a hub to meet, share and inspire. We are humbled and honored to host our 10 year anniversary exhibit, featuring work from artists who have participated in the Community Gallery’s themed exhibits over the past ten years.

Exquisite Corpse is an historic parlor game in which participants create one of three components of a figure drawing: head, torso or legs. Approximately 140 participating artists have created one of those distinct sections. When assembled together, these sections will create an exhibit that unites the disparate parts into singular figures. Priced at $150 each and sold individually, buyers have the opportunity to create personal arrangements. The intent of the exhibit is to showcase the artists who have supported the Community Gallery.

The success of the Community Gallery is a direct result of the support and involvement of the community who have been both our fans and cheering section from the beginning. Their enthusiasm and investment in our non-traditional gallery approach has resulted in compelling programming that engages and educates, confronts and inspires. What better way to celebrate ten years of building innovative programming hand-in-hand with the community than to have a decade of artists together build a collective work of art? This exhibit is a visual metaphor for our unorthodox gallery approach! After all, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

The City of Santa Fe Arts Commission wants to thank all of the artists, visitors, volunteers, local galleries, collectors, partners and community organizations who have contributed to the success of the Community Gallery and our 10 YEARS of programming. Without every component of the equation, it would not have been as successful… or fun.
