Q: Where can I get my pet vaccinated or spayed/neutered?
A: Any veterinarian can provide these services for your pet. In addition, The Santa Fe Animal Shelter has a low-cost Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic at 2570 Camino Entrada that can provide vaccinations and low-cost spay/neuter services.
Q: Do I have to spay/neuter my pet?
A: City ordinances state that all dogs and cats over 6 months of age must be spayed or neutered. You are allowed to keep an animal that is not spayed or neutered but you must purchase the appropriate city animal license ($50.00/year) and breeder permit ($125.00/year per breeding animal). In addition, fines you must pay to claim an unaltered pet are substantially higher than for a pet that has been spayed/neutered.
Q: Where do I get an animal license or breeder permit?
A: Pet licenses (required for dogs and cats) are purchased from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. You can contact them at (505) 983-4309, extension 606, for licensing requirements. Breeder permits are purchased through City Animal Services at their office. You can contact them at (505) 955-2708 for further information.
Q: What number do I call to report loose animals, dangerous animals, injured animals, abused or neglected animals etc.?
A: Contact Regional Dispatch at (505) 955-2700 and they will dispatch an Animal Services Officer to investigate.
Q: Does the City have a leash law?
A: Yes. City ordinance 5-5.4 states that dogs must be leashed at all times (with a leash no longer than 8 feet in length) and under the immediate physical control of its owner. The only exception is if the dog is in a designated dog park. When out with your dog, you must also have with you a means of cleaning up after your dog. Dogs and cats are not allowed to run loose in the City.
