DON'T FORGET YOUR BAGS!  theRE is a  10-cent paper bag fee in effect.

The amended Reusable Bag Ordinance went into effect on April 29, 2015 requiring retail stores to charge a 10-cent fee for every paper grocery bag provided to customers. The ordinance is intended to encourage the use of reusable shopping bags.

Stores are not required to charge the 10-cent fee to any person with a voucher or electronic benefits card issued under Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC), the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), Temporary Assistance to Needy Families Program (TANF), or the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, also known as Basic Food Stamps).

Retail stores should charge a 10-cent fee for every paper grocery bag provided to customers.The ordinance applies to paper bags that have a manufacturer’s stated capacity of one-eighth barrel (typical grocery store bag - 882 cubic inches) or larger. Exceptions to this fee are that the fee shall not be charged to any person with a voucher or electronic benefits card issued under Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC), the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), Temporary Assistance to Needy Families Program (TANF), or the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, also known as Basic Food Stamps). Retail establishments shall indicate on the customer transaction receipt the number of paper grocery bags provided and the total amount of the environmental service fees charged. One cent ($0.01) of the ten cent ($0.10) environmental service fee collected for every paper grocery bag provided shall be retained by the retail establishment for administrative costs incurred by the collection and reporting of the fee to the city. The remainder of the fee collected must be transmitted to the City of Santa Fe by the 25th of each month, however, retailers may elect to remit the fee on a quarterly basis.
