The Art On Loan Program facilitates the display of privately-owned artworks on city-owned property. The program is managed by the Art in Public Places Committee with the goal of beautifying Santa Fe while increasing awareness and appreciation of the visual arts.

The program enables a larger number of artists to participate in the Art in Public Places Program, while increasing the presence of public art in Santa Fe. In addition, artists are offered an opportunity to contribute to the community by sharing their art with a broader audience. This is particularly important as many of the artists who participate in the program are mid or emerging career artists whose work is not widely seen.

The City Council approved the creation of this program in April 2003. As of January 2009, over twenty five artworks have been placed around the city as part of the Loan Program.

Each summer, the Arts Commission puts out an open call for artists to submit work for the exhibition. This year, all submissions are due August 6th, 2010 at 5:00 PM. Primarily, three-dimensional artworks appropriate for outdoor public display are considered. However, indoor placement of two-dimensional artwork may be available on a limited basis. The Art in Public Places Committee serves as the selection committee. Their recommendations are then forwarded to the Arts Commission.

The AIPP Committee uses the following guidelines when considering an application:

After being juried by the Committee, artworks are matched with appropriate sites based on availability, the lender’s preferences, and feedback from community groups associated with the sites.

The Arts Commission has evaluated a variety of locations across the city. Below is a list of the Arts Commission's recommended locations for the placement of art work. We will work with the lender to place art in other city-owned locations not on the list, if they conform to the Commission's standards of visibility and safety.

To propose a piece of artwork for public display, potential lenders must fill out a loan proposal form. If you are an individual who owns the piece, please fill out the "Individual Proposal Form" below. If you are a gallery representing an artist, please fill out the "Gallery Proposal Form."
