Children at Play

On
October 21, 1979, the City of Santa Fe dedicated the “Children’s Fountain” by local artist Linda Strong.  Donated to the City by Linda and her mother, Roberta Utz, the fountain was a celebration of the community’s youth and marker of the International Year of the Child.  From its dedication through 2002, the fountain remained in De Vargas Park becoming a treasured landmark and source of enjoyment for the entire community.  With growing awareness of water resources and a shift in the park’s use the fountain was removed from the park and placed in storage until a new installation could be design at a future site.

In 2010, with the help of Mayor David Coss and the collaborative efforts of the City’s Library, Parks Division and Arts Commission a new home for the piece was found at the Southside Branch Library in the heart of Tierra Contenta on Santa Fe’s south side.  The new installation allows for the piece to be viewed and enjoyed while conserving precious water resources.  Gracing the Library’s entry plaza, the piece welcomes community members young and old to the library.
