Boot and Tow
Non-payment of three or more parking fines will cause your car to be placed on the "Boot and Tow" eligible list. In order to get the boot removed from your car, you must pay all outstanding citations, plus a $50 boot removal fine.

If no payment is received by the Parking Division within 72 hours, the car will be towed and impounded. All of the above-mentioned fees, plus the impound and towing fees will need to be paid before the car will be released.

Legal Authority to Move Improperly Parked Vehicles

Section 12-12-18 of the New Mexico Uniform Traffic Ordinance states, "under the provisions of this seciton, any municipal police officer, or any municipal employee who is authorized to direct traffic or enforce state or local parking or motor vehicle laws, may order the impoundment of any vehicle within the municipal corporate limits, without prior notice to the owner or operator thereof".

Marking Tires
Marking the tires with chalk is one method of time-limit enforcement. After the tires are marked, the Parking Enforcement Officer records the time and location. The tires are checked after the permitted time and vehicles that have not been moved are ticketed, even if the meter has not expired.

Parking Beyond Posted Time Limits
To encourage parking turnover and to best utilize the limited number of short-term parking spaces, section 12-6-6.12 of the New Mexico Uniform Traffic Code prohibits parking beyond posted time limits and meter durations.

"It is unlawful for any vehicle to remain parked in a regulated parking space, or posted time zone, beyond the posted time limit, or beyond the time limit posted on the meter." A parker may not add more coins to the parking meter to add time.

Enforcing Expired Parking Meters
Upon observing an expired parking meter, the Parking Enforcement Officer will inspect the vehicle for valid and visible parking zone or meter permits; or valid placards for persons with disabilities.

Parking Meter Malfunctions
Parking meter malfunctions, and other questions may be directed to:

P.O. Box 909

Under city ordinance, section 12-6-6.12 a vehicle must be removed from a designated parking meter space after two hours or a $16 fine may be imposed.

The time limits are enforced daily, except Sundays and public holidays. Streets with two-hour time limits are:
