With the 2011 wildfire season upon us, there are measures you can take to prepare. In addition to preparing a 72-hour disaster kit (have one ready in your vehicle or in your home reay to go), practicing your family disaster plan, and getting involved in the community, other steps you can take are:
- Identify multiple egress routes from your neighborhood (evacuation may be necessary)
- Create defensible space around your home
- Use fire-resistant material when building, renovating, or retrofitting (the fire may be moving too fast and shelter-in-place in your home may be the better option than being stuck in traffic in your vehicle trying to leave)
- Install a smoke detector and maintain its batteries
