Planning Commission Training On-Going

On March 27, 2009 the members of the Santa Fe Planning Commission joined planning commissioners from the City of Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Bernalillo County, Sandoval County, and Angel Fire in Albuquerque for a special training session for Planning Commissioners sponsored by the New Mexico Chapter of the American Planning Association.
    
Presenting planning-related topics and leading in-depth discussions were:  John A. Myers, an Albuquerque attorney practices law in Albuquerque and has a distinguished career spanning over 30 years in both the public and private sector; William Kraemer, principal of Garcia/Kraemer & Associates; Dr. Robert Czerniak, Associate Vice President for Research at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces; and Tom Mills, distinguished Santa Fe attorney and former Santa Fe Planning Commissioner.

    The March 27, 2009 training session followed a similar session on February 8, 2008 sponsored by the City of Santa Fe Land Use Department that provided specialized training in land use and zoning by Anita Miller, a well-recognized land use lawyer and UNM Law School Professor.

Planning Commission Community Outreach

 

    On Saturday, May 9, 2009 members of the Planning Commission held a mock commission hearing at Atalaya Elementary School in Santa Fe. The mock hearing was the finale of a 7-week student enrichment program at Atalaya for 3rd through 6th grade students.

    The purpose of the program was to challenge the students to design their visions for the expansion of their school while integrating math, reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. The students planned and sketched their designs and then constructed scale models. Commissioners O'Reilly, Bordegaray, and Lindell heard impressive presentations from multiple design teams and tested the students on their design concepts and thought processes.  The hearing was followed by a pot-luck lunch with the students and their teachers and parents.
