Solar Start-up Makes New Product a Reality
at the home of Kenneth and Kathleen DeHoff, who had the SLIC integrated into their new solar-assisted heating system, built by Cedar Mountain Solar of Santa Fe.

The successful SLIC installation represents a landmark for the solar heating industry. Currently heating contractors assemble solar heating controls with a variety of off-the-shelf hardware components, many of which are not designed for solar heating systems. Since these systems generally integrate multiple heat sources (such as solar and one or more auxiliary heat sources) with multiple heating outputs (radiant floors, domestic hot water, pools, spas, etc.) the complexity of controls has kept most contractors out of the market. The advent of the SLIC, which eliminates design and installation complexity by providing an integrated, off-the-shelf combination hardware/software solution, will enable a much broader cross-section of heating contractors to sell and install solar heating systems without extensive training.

In addition to on-site system control, the SLIC provides a bevy of ancillary benefits. It is connected to the internet and provides both the DeHoffs and SolarLogic with real-time and historical system monitoring, enabling remote diagnostics, remote system operation, and data-logging. The additional features enhance the value of the system by giving the homeowner unparalleled access to system control and support, and providing a real-time window into system operation. Moreover, the SLIC can optimize solar thermal heat capture and utilization in ways not achievable before with component-based controls. At the stroke of a key on his home computer, system owner Ken DeHoff can use SLIC innovative features such as “whole-house solar-only mode” to maximize his energy savings.

Solar Logic’s next step is to streamline the product to make it more cost-effective for manufacturing, which it will accomplish after another financing round this winter. The firm plans to have the SLIC on the market by the end of 2010.

The SLIC was developed with funds from the City of Santa Fe and private investors. As an investment in job creation and the local green economy, the City of Santa Fe’s Economic Development Division awarded SolarLogic a grant of $30,000 earlier this year. “SolarLogic’s innovative business model and deep roots in the community made this a good investment for the City’s economic development fund,” said Fabian Trujillo, director of Economic Development for the City. The grant funded new infrastructure and equipment for the Company.

The City of Santa Fe’s Economic Development Division works to improve the quality of life in Santa Fe and smoothes the path to success for both individuals and organizations. Businesses can contact Santa Fe Economic Development for assistance with financing, expanding, and relocating, or other technical assistance. For more information on the City’s Economic Development activities please visit www.santafebiz.org.

Census Day is April 1, 2010
The 2010 Census will have one of the shortest census questionnaires in the history of the United States. The questionnaire will ask just name, gender, age, race, ethnicity, relationship and whether the householder owns or rents their home. The Census form will take about ten minutes to complete and answers are protected by law and strictly confidential.

Why should you participate? The Census determines how many congressional seats are allocated to New Mexico and how the federal government will allocate $300 billion in federal assistance to state, local, and tribal governments. This funding goes to roads, schools, senior services and human service programs.

Service Changes Set for Santa Fe Trails and Santa Fe Ride on November 2
The changes that Santa Fe Ride customers will notice most will be the hours of operation and service on holidays.

Instead of operating 24 hours a day/seven days a week/365 days a year, Santa Fe Ride will operate the same hours as the revised Santa Fe Trails schedule: Monday through Friday 6 a.m. until 10 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Sundays 8:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.

There will be no regular service provided on either Santa Fe Trails or Santa Fe Ride on New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving or Christmas. A Saturday schedule (8 a.m. until 8 p.m.) will be observed on Martin Luther King’s Day, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, the Friday after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve Day.

The Santa Fe Ride and Santa Fe Trails service areas will remain the same.

Santa Fe Trails Routes 5, 6 and M will now operate every hour. Service frequency on Routes1, 4, 21, 22, and 24 will remain the same. Route 2 will continue to run every 15 minutes until 5:30 p.m. Routes M and 2 will now serve the Railyard and Route 21 will now serve the Nava Adé subdivision on Governor Miles Road.

The changes to operating hours, routes and service frequencies were necessary to reduce system costs and were approved as a part of the City of Santa Fe’s FY 2009/2010 budget. More severe reductions were considered, including eliminating Sunday service, but a public meeting that was held in September that gathered constituents’ input, and the city’s current financial picture, staved off these cuts.

Santa Fe Living Wage Rate Adjusted to $9.85
MEDIA RELEASE
Date: Friday, January 16, 2009

Sevastian Gurule, City of Santa Fe Constituent Services Manager, (505) 955-6047

Santa Fe Living Wage Rate Adjusted to $9.85

The City of Santa Fe announces that the Living Wage has been adjusted to $9.85 per hour for the year 2009.

In November 2008, the City of Santa Fe announced a Living Wage increase from $9.50 per hour to $9.92. The City of Santa Fe used the Consumer Price Index 12-month average from October to October as the figure for the previous year in order to give businesses and employees the most stable, up-to-date number while also providing enough time to plan for the upcoming year.

Now that the January to January numbers have been released, the City is adjusting the Living Wage to $9.85 to best reflect the intent of the City’s Living Wage law. The ordinance states that “Beginning Jan. 1, 2009, and each year thereafter, the minimum wage shall be adjusted upward by an amount corresponding to the previous year's increase, if any, in the consumer price index for the western region for urban wage earners and clerical workers.”

The City of Santa Fe's Living Wage Ordinance was adopted to establish minimum hourly wage rates. Santa Fe is a national leader in the Living Wage movement. Minimum wage laws promote the general welfare, health, safety and prosperity of Santa Fe by ensuring that workers can better support and care for their families through their own efforts and without financial governmental assistance. All profit and non-profit businesses with a business license or business registration issued by the City of Santa Fe, including part time and temporary employees as well as city contractors, are required to pay their workers according to the minimum hourly wage set by the city.
